Law enforcement agencies reported a decrease of 5.4 percent in the number of violent crimes brought to their attention during the first six months of 2013 when compared with figures reported for the same time period in 2012.

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, told attendees at the NRA’s annual convention in Indianapolis that they should “stand up and fight” for their gun rights.

“Almost everywhere you look, something has gone wrong,” LaPierre told backers, according to the New York Daily News. “You feel it in your heart, you know it in your gut. Something has gone wrong. The core values we believe in, the things we care about most, are changing. Eroding. Our right to speak. Our right to gather. Our right to privacy. The freedom to work, and practice our religion, and raise and protect our families the way we see fit.”

However, the FBI’s “Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report” reveals that law enforcement agencies reported a decrease of 5.4 percent in the number of violent crimes brought to their attention during the first six months of 2013 when compared with figures reported for the same time period in 2012. In addition, the number of property crimes in the U.S. from January to June of 2013 fell 5.4 percent when compared with data from the same time period in 2012.

“There are terrorists and home invaders and drug cartels and carjackers and knockout gamers and rapers, haters, campus killers, airport killers, shopping mall killers, road-rage killers, and killers who scheme to destroy our country with massive storms of violence against our power grids, or vicious waves of chemicals or disease that could collapse the society that sustains us all,” LaPierre added.

According to a report from The Associated Press, the NRA is using its annual convention to promote a universal gun law that would allow concealed weapons permits issued in one state to be recognized everywhere, regardless of the local laws.

On the same day as the start of the NRA convention, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a new ad featuring families of gun violence victims, as well as survivors of gun violence. The ad, called “Not Our Words,” comes a week after Bloomberg announced a $50 million gun control campaign.
