A Brazilian drug mule who tried to smuggle $3.5 million of cocaine into New Zealand has been jailed for six years.

Joao Batista Da Silveira, 39, arrived at Auckland International Airport on March 7 with 2.35 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the lining of his suitcase.

Customs officers spotted "irregularities" when the bag was X-rayed and uncovered the huge class-A drug haul when they cut into it.

Da Silveira immediately confessed to police that he had been given $2000 for his role, with a further payment of $20,000 due when he returned to Brazil.

Three men he was supposed to meet in Christchurch have been arrested and until this week police were also looking for Rodrigo Gerlach Rila, 43, who had been living on the North Shore.
