| Subject: YaY! "We fought HMRC over a £10,000 bill for four years" and they won! Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:24 pm | |
| John Kent is proof that it’s worth fighting your case. The 67-year-old former software engineering company director from Martin, Lincs, fought HMRC over a demand for £10,000 in underpaid tax for four years. This week, he finally won.
Chronic illness forced him to give up work in 2006, so he began to draw cash from a personal pension while receiving incapacity benefit from his old employer. He told HMRC about his change in circumstances.
But, in 2009, a £10,000 demand landed on his doormat for underpaid tax on his pension payments.
Mr Kent (pictured with wife Kerry) was outraged and set out to get it written off. In 2011, HMRC wiped £6,600 off his bill. But he fought on, and this week the remaining £3,300 debt was struck off. He has also been paid £100 compensation.
Mr Kent says: ‘It’s been three years of absolute hell. But I refused to give up. They treated me very badly. The way to beat them is through tenacity and persistence — never give up.’
