Second Amendment advocacy groups and conservative organizations continue to distance themselves from "professional rabble-rouser" Adam Kokesh's plan for armed protestors to march on all state capitals on July 4 to demand "an orderly dissolution of the federal government."

On May 24, Kokesh issued a call for a "Final American Revolution" march on state capitals after cancelling a planned July 4 "Open Carry March" on Washington D.C. -- an event condemned as needlessly confrontational, dangerous, and ultimately self-defeating by the NRA, Gun Owners of America, Second Amendment Foundation, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, the Tea Party and the Republican Party.

A former Marine corporal and Fallujah veteran of the Iraq War, Kokesh, 31, is a libertarian anti-war activist, podcaster, talk radio host, Republican Congressional candidate in New Mexico, and self-described "anarcho-capitalist."

According to David A. Fahrenthold and Peter Hermann of the Washington Post, Kokesh has made a career as "a professional rabble-rouser (who) has embraced positions on every side of the political spectrum," ranging from Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Ron Paul, marijuana legalization and gunowners' rights.

In early May, Kokesh asked visitors to his Facebook page -- Adam V. The Man -- to join him on an "Open Carry March" into Washington, D.C., on July 4. The plan was to muster at the National Cemetery in Virginia at noon, walk across the Memorial Bridge into “gun free” Washington, D.C., and parade down Independence Avenue, around the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the White House, before returning to Virginia.

"We will march with rifles loaded AND slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated and cower in submission to tyranny," Kokesh wrote on his Facebook page. "We are marching to mark the high-water mark of government and to turn the tide. This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent."

He hoped to get 10,000 people to sign up by June 1 on his Facebook event page, but would march with just 1,000 actual attendees.

But on May 24, Kokesh introduced a “new strategy for Independence Day.” Instead of marching on Washington, he called for a “decentralized, open source” march on state capitols on July 4 and urged citizens "to demand the orderly dissolution of the federal government" to launch the "Final American Revolution."

As of noon on July 3, Kokesh's page had 112,000 visitors and 55,872 likes with more than 6,000 saying they're "going" to the "Final American Revolution," although it is uncertain if they planned to attend the "Open Carry March" in Washington before it was canceled or any of the state capital marches.

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said he didn't know one gunowner who planned to attend the "Open Carry March," or any of the state capital marches.

“That’s a good way to provoke something, and that’s not likely to end well,” he said. "It's not the kind of thing we would be involved with. The folks are potentially there in Congress to take away the unsatisfactory laws, and we think we can possibly get that done."

"It’s hard for most folks to see a contingent of strangers marching into their cities with loaded rifles as anything less than a threatening invasion," writes conservative commentator Massad Ayoob on May 25 in Backwoods Home Magazine. "Intimidation does not win sympathy for even the most righteous cause."

“Honestly, it’s difficult to imagine a worse idea, particularly in the midst of a heated debate with gun grabbers in the government,” Jazz Shaw writes for Hot Air. "If (Kokesh) wanted to promote an act of peacefully breaking the law to make a point, it would certainly be worthy of considering. For example, you could take a large number of people to block the entrance to the main office of the A.T.F and force the police to arrest and remove you, but this is something very different.”

"Many gullible gun-rights activists have been promoting a July 4th armed march on Washington organized by Adam Kokesh. Just stop it," writes nationally syndicated conservative columnist Michelle Malkin on May 13. "Responsible gun rights activists: Don’t jump on Kokesh’s bandwagon. It’s a crazy train."
