| Cars are becoming kinder to other road users.
The latest BMW 3-Series has been commended for its pedestrian protection measures following a crash test in Europe, while Volvo has released an image of a world-first airbag designed to save pedestrians.
In the results of recent crash testing conducted in Europe, Euro NCAP awarded the maximum five stars to the BMW compact sedan range. It noted the car achieved a high 78 per cent score for pedestrian protection despite not being fitted with an “active bonnet”, a device some car makers use to lift up the bonnet and prevent the pedestrian’s head from striking hard objects beneath it such as the engine and suspension mounts. Safety-minded Swedish car maker Volvo has taken the concept a step further, devising the world’s first pedestrian airbag. It released a first photograph of the airbag yesterday, which deploys in tandem with an active bonnet to cushion a potential impact with the lower part of the windscreen and the windscreen pillars.
