| Subject: Funny: Business Puts Customer's Name On Sign, Asks Him To Pay Bill Sat Jul 24, 2010 12:41 am | |
| HANOVER, Pa. -- A sign outside a Midas store along Route 94 near Hanover, York County, is seen by a lot of cars, and lately it's been generating quite a bit of buzz.
The sign wasn't just an advertisement. It also displayed the name of a customer and said "Pay your bill now!"
Diane Gelhard, the manager of the store, says the shop had no choice after numerous, unsuccessful attempts to collect $450 dollars from the Hanover man. The bill for car repairs was reportedly over a month past due. The dealership said they gave the man his car after he promised to pay.
"We thought we could get our money if we put his name up on a message board," said Gelhard.
If the customer was embarrased by the sign, managers at the car repair shop say that was not their intent.
"I am sorry for that, but you make your bill and you should be able to pay for your bills," said Gelhard.
The hard ball approach apparently paid off for the shop. When the dealership opened Friday morning, the manager found an envelope that was left in the overnight key slot.
"The envelope had money in it to pay his bill and he said he would pay the rest in a week," said shop foreman Gary Heim.
The "pay your bill" message was removed from the sign. But will a similar one take its place?
Gelhard isn't sure. She says the message generated a lot of comments on the Hanover Evening Sun website. While some were supportive, others called it an extreme tactic that should not have been done. "I am not comfortabile with all the reaction. I had no idea it was going to get this reaction," said Gelhard.
