PARENTS who smoke while their children are in the car could face a $250 fine and shops will no longer be allowed to display cigarettes under proposals aimed at lowering the smoking rate in NSW.
NSW will follow South Australia, the first state to ban adults from lighting up in cars carrying children, and overhaul smoking laws by cracking down on tobacco marketing and gimmicks.
Since South Australia introduced the laws last May, just 41 drivers have been given $75 on-the-spot fines by police.
Tasmanian legislation came into effect in January, with fines of up to $2000 for people smoking in cars with children.
